BTU is a small, internationally recognised technical university dedicated to teaching and research. We provide sustainable educational services, by imparting interdisciplinary competencies, that go well beyond engineering and scientific knowledge and skills.

Our university conducts its academic and research endeavours at the highest international levels. With its proven excellence in academics and research in a ‘real-life laboratory’ setting, we combine a decidedly international orientation with a strong regional accent. On the one hand, we maintain close ties with industry and potential employers, on the other we wholeheartedly support the principle of “value creation through learning”.

Our core research areas are in:
- Energy
- Environment
- Materials
- Building
- Information and Communication Engineering

Overview of the Town or City

Cottbus is situated in the eastern part of Germany, about 100 kilometres from the German Capital, Berlin. With about 100,000 inhabitants, Cottbus is a bustling, medium-sized city in the centre of the Lausitz region. It is a green city with a chain of parks including the Branitz Park, which is one of the most important landscape gardens in Germany. In summer the park with its pyramids and beautiful watercourses are perfect for picnics and concerts in the open countryside. Throughout the city there are gardens, promenades, squares and tree-lined avenues. The footpaths along the banks of the River Spree are especially delightful for walking or cycling.

Plays, ballets, opera and orchestral performances are all available at the State Theatre in Cottbus which boasts an excellent reputation.

The presence of the students from the University has given the city a special atmosphere, with activities like film festivals, rock concerts, and lively bars. There are also several cinemas catering to both mainstream and international tastes in Cottbus.
